e-Government Congres
Square, imec booth #37 & 38, Brussels Meeting Centre, BelgiumThe Belgian Presidency is hosting a Conference in Brussels on December 15th-16th under the title “Lift-off towards Open Government”
The first ever Ministerial eGovernment Conference was held in 2001; this Conference aims to demonstrate the achievement of past European eGovernment efforts, and the impact of this for citizens and industry. The main theme of this conference will be about “Open Government”, emphasizing to the implementation of cross-border interoperability in practice.
Topics and themes like the presentation of a number of large international projects (STORK, SPOCS, PEPPOL,epSOS), the eGovernment Action Plan 2011-2015 or Europe 2020 – The Digital Agenda will feature large in the Conference Program. Two days full of breakout-sessions, a ‘Battle of the CEO’s’, a gala dinner and an exhibition will ensure that this Conference is an excellent networking event and well worth a trip to Brussels.

Demo-avond 2010: betrouwbaarheid van elektronica
imec, LeuvenBekijk betrouwbaarheid van elektronica vanuit verschillende invalshoeken (chip/verpakking/bord niveau) en leer hoe het ene niveau het andere kan beïnvloeden.
Maak kennis met de wetenschappelijke methodiek bij de ontwikkeling en realisatie van elektronica, en leer hoe die kennis kan gebruikt worden om de complexiteit van elektronische producten beter te beheersen en hun betrouwbaarheid te waarborgen.

Supercomputers: Vlaanderen gaat de technische uitdagingen aan
Eerder dit jaar opende Intel in Vlaanderen het ExaScience Lab. Hierin werken onderzoekers van Intel, Imec en alle Vlaamse universiteiten rond innovatieve software oplossingen voor toekomstige exa-scale supercomputers.
Supercomputers zijn de laatste decennia gestaag krachtiger geworden. Als deze trend zich verder zet, dan kunnen we rond 2018 de komst van exa-scale supercomputers verwachten. Die zullen ongeveer 500 keer krachtiger zijn dan de huidige krachtigste computer. Dit is de kracht van 50 miljoen desktop Pc’s. Het ExaScience Lab werkt aan fundamentele innovaties om software te kunnen ontwikkelen voor exa-scale supercomputers.
In dit Visionair Seminarie gaan we dieper in op de verwachte problemen met toekomstige supercomputers. We schetsen de oplossingen waaraan wordt gewerkt binnen het ExaScience Lab, en waarom Intel dit Lab in Vlaanderen heeft opgestart. Het onderzoek naar ‘Ruimteweer’ is traditioneel een zware gebruiker van supercomputers. Naast een introductie van het concept 'Ruimteweer' en de gevolgen hiervan op aarde, schetsen we welke vooruitgang exa-scale computers in de toekomst mogelijk maken.
Naast de academische wereld kan ook de Vlaamse industrie zijn voordeel halen uit de Vlaamse supercomputer infrastructuur en het onderzoek naar toekomstige supercomputers. Lees verder

Mind Speller in concert "Giving a voice to the voiceless"
Cultureel centrum De Wildeman; Schoolstraat, 15, 3020 HerentDe Mind Speller® is een apparaat waarmee een subject kan communiceren zonder dat hiervoor spraak of spieractiviteit nodig is. Het subject kijkt naar een scherm waarop een aantal selectiemogelijkheden getoond worden (cijfers, letters, beelden, commando's), en schenkt aandacht naar één van deze mogelijkheden. Het toestel leest gelijktijdig de hersenactiviteit (EEG) uit, en beslist op basis hiervan waarnaar het subject aandacht schenkt. Met dit apparaat kunnen dan in principe teksten, e-mails, SMS’en, e.d. geschreven en verstuurd worden of commando's, voor het aansturen van apparaten, worden doorgegeven. De wereld draait op elektronische chips. Die chips worden gemaakt van silicium in gesofistikeerde clean room Fabs. Sinds een tiental jaar wordt door industriële en academische onderzoekslabs wereldwijd gewerkt aan een nieuw soort chip, de fotonische chip, die gemaakt kan worden van hetzelfde silicium in hetzelfde type Fab. Dit is de wereld van “silicon photonics”. Samen met imec betrekt UGent een voorname plaats in dit onderzoek.

Visionair Seminarie: “Smart Grids: opportuniteiten voor Vlaanderen”
3001, imec, Leuven, BelgiumOnze energievoorziening gaat een periode van grote verandering in. Ook de elektriciteitsdistributie dient een hele sprong te maken om de evolutie naar een duurzame energievoorziening in een vrije marktomgeving mogelijk te maken.
Door de toenemende komst van windturbines, zonne-energieparken, fotovoltaïsche installaties bij particulieren of bedrijven, (micro-)WKK, warmtepompen, elektrische opslag, thermische opslag, energiemeters, plug-in hybride voertuigen en intelligente verbruikstoestellen zal het niveau van energie-uitwisselingen over het elektriciteitsnet stijgen. Hierbij moeten we ervoor zorgen dat de vraag en aanbod op elkaar afgestemd worden, wat niet evident is bij moeilijk te voorspellen hernieuwbare bronnen en onregelmatig verbruikende klanten die niet willen inboeten op gebruiksgemak, noch meer wensen te betalen. Onze stroomnetten moeten daarom 'intelligenter' worden.
Intelligente energienetwerken, of Smart Grids, worden beschouwd als hét instrument om groene stroom tot bij de verbruikers te brengen en de vrije elektriciteitsmarkt te laten werken.
Daarnaast zijn zij noodzakelijk voor de vlotte introductie van duurzame technologieën zoals elektrische voertuigen.
Vlaanderen bereidt zich voor op het bouwen en invoeren van geïntegreerde en slim bestuurde systemen die energieverbruikende toestellen intelligent aansturen en op deze manier de beschikbare hernieuwbare energie optimaal benutten. After attending this seminar you will realize that the IC ecosystem is closer to your business than might be expected. The expertise available in the ecosystem not only allows you to make ICs with high complexity but it can also be beneficial for systems with a lower degree of complexity. Obviously, collaboration with local partners is important for successful projects.
