Sensor systems for industrial applications
The R&D for the Wireless Autonomous Transducer Solutions program (WATS) is carried out by imec's sister company imec The Netherlands at Holst Centre.
The coming decade will see a rise in smart systems. Machines, buildings, vehicles, personal appliances will all be equipped with more intelligence. Intelligence that allows people and their surroundings to interact. Such smart systems will help manage the sustainability, complexity and safety of our world. Smart systems will be ultrasmall, cheap, intelligent, and low-power. They will include sensors, actuators, and processing and communication abilities, often in a one-chip wireless solution.
Developing the technology for these smart systems is a major R&D challenge. A challenge that we have been working on successfully for the past five years. In some of the key areas - MEMS for energy harvesting or low-power wireless technology - we are one of the world-leading centers. This is a.o. testified by our contributions at the major scientific conferences such as ISSCC and IEDM.
A second challenge will be to prove that this technology is ready for use in industry-level applications. That’s why we have carefully chosen a number of key applications as a showcase. We are now developing these applications further on the road to industrial-strength applications.
- Ultra-low power digital signal processing
- Ultra-low power wireless communication
- Micro-power generation and storage
