Imec aims to improve the performance of solar cells and reduce their cost. A substantial part of the future energy needs could be covered by solar energy, even if energy demand increased by a factor of 3 in the coming decades. But to realize this technical potential, the cost of generating electricity with photovoltaic cells has to come down with a factor of 5.
